# AROS open firmware: provenance, source and license Copyright the AROS Development Team and contributors. The AROS Research Operating System firmware is distributed under the AROS Public License (APL) version 1.1. A complete unmodified copy is in [license.html](license.html), also available at https://aros.sourceforge.io/license.html. Both firmware pairs are redistributed unmodified. No proprietary Commodore Kickstart firmware is included. ## Source availability The Source Code version of AROS is available under the AROS Public License from its official development repository: - Browse: https://github.com/aros-development-team/AROS - Download source: https://github.com/aros-development-team/AROS/archive/refs/heads/master.zip - Official source and build instructions: https://aros.sourceforge.io/documentation/developers/compiling.php No modifications were made to the AROS Covered Code. Upstream identifies the A1200 pair as the AROS m68k build of 2026-08-20, but does not record its exact AROS source revision. The source download above is the official source tree, not a claim that its current HEAD reproduces the historical binary byte for byte. ## Binary provenance and reproducible retrieval Retrieved 2026-10-31 from the already pinned Scripted Amiga Emulator revision `8ebce7b8beb9ebe243e5ea7b5150b3f16f665303`: - Main ROM: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/naTmeg/ScriptedAmigaEmulator/8ebce7b8beb9ebe243e5ea7b5150b3f16f665303/db/aros-amiga-m68k-rom.bin - Extended ROM: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/naTmeg/ScriptedAmigaEmulator/8ebce7b8beb9ebe243e5ea7b5150b3f16f665303/db/aros-amiga-m68k-ext.bin - Upstream provenance: https://github.com/naTmeg/ScriptedAmigaEmulator/blob/4984eddfb4bd43bbaf309ba8f86dbe418476e3b7/db/README.md SAE commit `4984eddfb4bd43bbaf309ba8f86dbe418476e3b7` describes these as the 2026-08-20 build from vAmiga. vAmiga introduced that pair in commit `35de004a2f1502c2811b9a8ebcde4d0979a98937`. | File | Bytes | CRC32 | SHA-256 | | --- | ---: | --- | --- | | aros-amiga-m68k-rom.bin | 524288 | 7ae94477 | fe97599321ed9a665637a9f57ec7be7b21498bd17b4c7a32b8bf1a95ae9588a4 | | aros-amiga-m68k-ext.bin | 524288 | 6f9a4ad2 | 5f078fa9be00f395d4ab2fdfb35d3fce0fd7a0312767d611664635fd10c14901 | ## Integration Both `/amiga/` and the protected `/dev/amiga/` alias load the two fixed open firmware pairs. `REGAME_AMIGA_ROM` is never consulted. The player offers A500 (68000, ECS Agnus/original Denise, 1 MiB CHIP plus 2 MiB compatibility fast RAM) and A1200 (68020/AGA, 2 MiB CHIP plus 4 MiB fast RAM). The A500's CHIP RAM stays exactly 1 MiB; the additional fast RAM avoids the open-firmware no-fast loading allocation failure. This is a tested configuration, not a minimum-RAM claim. A500 selects the SVN55696 (2019) pair below; A1200 retains the 2026 pair above. Main and extended firmware are set separately; the lowercase `aros` ROM filename selects SAE's built-in AROS compatibility path. The external custom game disk is not part of AROS or this firmware distribution. ## A500 compatibility firmware The A500 uses the older unmodified AROS m68k SVN55696 (2019) pair. The 2026 pair reached a post-loader ROM wait on the 68000 profile in browser testing; the 2019 pair reached the native Fort Apocalypse title. The A1200 continues to use the 2026-08-20 pair documented above. No proprietary firmware is used by either. The A500 files were retrieved 2026-10-31 from the pinned vAmiga revision `35de004a2f1502c2811b9a8ebcde4d0979a98937`: - Main ROM: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dirkwhoffmann/vAmiga/35de004a2f1502c2811b9a8ebcde4d0979a98937/Resources/Assets.xcassets/Binary/aros-svn55696-rom.dataset/aros-amiga-m68k-rom.bin - Extended ROM: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dirkwhoffmann/vAmiga/35de004a2f1502c2811b9a8ebcde4d0979a98937/Resources/Assets.xcassets/Binary/aros-svn55696-ext.dataset/aros-amiga-m68k-ext.bin | File | Bytes | CRC32 | SHA-256 | | --- | ---: | --- | --- | | a500/aros-amiga-m68k-rom.bin | 524288 | 3f4fcc0a | 9fb24d10af0b17d44600490d0b6de73fa66dc89878517d148edc3b3167bbeb93 | | a500/aros-amiga-m68k-ext.bin | 524288 | f2e52b07 | b24bcd442a65e653cc815d65f665162b683b7a0a998e9b36fbc0076b5cbeafe4 | These binaries are covered by the same AROS Public License 1.1 and official source access notice above. SVN55696 is the upstream build label; an exact Git source revision was not supplied with these binaries. Current source HEAD is not claimed to reproduce this historical pair byte for byte. The fixed `/amiga/rom-a500` and `/amiga/extended-rom-a500` routes serve only this open pair. Player profile metadata chooses both ROMs before startup; it does not change the protected game-delivery session or reconstruct different game bytes.
